illustreets was founded by Manuel Timita and Katya Koval.
Faced with the challenge of choosing a neighbourhood when buying their first home, data-minded Manuel began trawling through open government data, covering everything from property prices to crime rates, school performance and transport. But all this data – comprising over 9,000 datasets – comes packaged dry, in Excel.
illustreets was initially built as a way of taking such readily available information and wrapping it in an intuitive, visually appealing, filterable and searchable format. Usable, in other words.
That is the illustreets mission. To make data accessible.
With Katya’s help, Manuel continued to build a tool that can take any dataset – or combination of datasets - and make it presentable to non-technical users. Crucially, it requires no coding knowledge on the part of the author, either.
The increasing availability of data is useless if it is confined to coding geeks and professional analysts. illustreets unlocks the value in big data by lowering the technical barrier to entry.
Manuel combines years of experience building cutting edge solutions for enterprise with a deep and varied IT expertise, including infrastructure, SQL, Java, Node.js, statistical packages and natural language processing. He occupies a rare intersection between programmer and genuine GIS expert.
